The Day Master and the Ten Gods: how a chart names its parts
Every Ba Zi chart is read from one point: the heavenly stem of the day pillar, called the Day Master. The other characters are not good or bad in themselves. Each is named by how it stands to that one stem, and the names are the Ten Gods. This guide explains the five relationships behind the names, why yin and yang split each into two, and what the names can and cannot tell you.

Open the calculator guideThe Day Master: one stem, fixed by the date
A Ba Zi chart has four pillars, for the year, month, day and hour of birth, and each pillar is one heavenly stem standing on one earthly branch. The stem of the day pillar is the Day Master, 日主, the observing centre of the chart. It is set by the date of birth. The hour pillar needs a birth hour; the Day Master does not, so a chart with an uncertain hour still has a clear self to read from.
There are ten stems: 甲 and 乙 are wood, 丙 and 丁 fire, 戊 and 己 earth, 庚 and 辛 metal, 壬 and 癸 water. The first of each pair is yang, the second yin, so the Day Master is always one of ten, from 甲, yang wood, to 癸, yin water. Tradition reads the day pillar as the seat of the self, with the branch beneath it as the partner seat. Five elements, each with a yang and a yin expression: ten moving forces, not ten fixed destinies.

Five relationships, drawn from the five phases
The five phases feed one another around a circle and check one another across a star. Wood feeds fire, fire feeds earth, earth feeds metal, metal feeds water, water feeds wood. Wood checks earth, earth checks water, water checks fire, fire checks metal, metal checks wood. Set the Day Master’s element at the centre and every other element falls into exactly one of five relationships: the same as me, what I produce, what I control, what controls me, and what produces me.
Take a wood Day Master. Wood is the same as me. Fire is what I produce, because wood feeds fire. Earth is what I control. Metal is what controls me. Water is what produces me. Change the Day Master to fire and every answer shifts one step: now earth is what I produce, metal what I control, water what controls me, wood what produces me. Nothing has changed its nature; only the point of view has moved.

Yin and yang split each relationship into two names
Five relationships would give five names. The Ten Gods are ten because polarity counts. Every stem is yang or yin, and each relationship divides by whether the other stem shares the Day Master’s polarity or opposes it. The pattern is not symmetrical: among peers and output, the same polarity carries the steadier name; among wealth, officer and seal, the opposite polarity does, and those are the ones written with 正, proper.
Take 甲, yang wood, as the Day Master. 甲 elsewhere in the chart is 比肩; 乙, yin wood, is 劫財. 丙, yang fire, is 食神; 丁, yin fire, is 傷官. 戊, yang earth, is 偏財; 己, yin earth, is 正財. 庚, yang metal, is 七殺; 辛, yin metal, is 正官. 壬, yang water, is 偏印; 癸, yin water, is 正印. Now make 乙 the Day Master and 丙 becomes 傷官, because the polarities no longer match. The same stem, a different name, in a different chart.
| Relationship to the Day Master | Same polarity | Opposite polarity | What the pair names |
|---|---|---|---|
| Same element | 比肩 | 劫財 | Peers, siblings, rivals |
| What the Day Master produces | 食神 | 傷官 | Output: expression, talent, what you make |
| What the Day Master controls | 偏財 | 正財 | Wealth: resources, money, what you manage |
| What controls the Day Master | 七殺 | 正官 | Officer: rules, duty, pressure, position |
| What produces the Day Master | 偏印 | 正印 | Seal: support, learning, protection |
What the names point to, and the trap in translating them
The Chinese names are old shorthand, and each describes a position before it describes a person. 財, wealth, is what you control, so it names resources and money and, in classical usage, a man’s wife. 官, officer, is what controls you: rules, duty, rank, and in classical usage a woman’s husband. 印, seal, is what produces you: support, learning, documents, mothers. 食傷, output, is what you produce: speech, talent, children. 比劫, peers, are the stems that match your own: siblings, friends, competitors.
English renderings can mislead. 七殺 is often translated as Seven Killings and 傷官 as Hurting Officer, and both sound like verdicts. They are positions. 七殺 is the element that controls the Day Master at the same polarity: pressure, discipline, the demand that shapes as readily as it burdens. 傷官 is output at the opposite polarity, called hurting because what you produce controls what controls you; it is the talent that talks back to authority. Read the name as grammar and the fear goes out of it.
Grammar, not verdict
A Ten Gods label tells you how one character stands to the self, not whether that is good news. The same 七殺 is a backbone in a chart where the Day Master is strong and in season, and a weight in a chart where it is not. Each earthly branch also holds one to three hidden stems, and each of those takes a Ten Gods name too. A chart is not eight labels but a structure in which each is weighed against the rest.
That is why the Ten Gods are taught here as a relationship and not handed out as results. Ten Gods relationships are calculated from a specific chart: the Day Master, the other stems and branches, polarity and the full birth record. A list of ten names with ten meanings cannot read a chart; a page that assigns you a personality from one has skipped the work. Learn the grammar here. Let the sentence be read whole.
From the names to a reading
Once you can find your Day Master, the whole chart turns legible: you can see which stems are peers or output, where wealth and officer sit, and what feeds you. The free primer casts four pillars live from any birth date and stores nothing, so you can practise on your own chart and on a friend’s. The calculator guide explains which calendar, place and time details to check first.
The weighing is the reading. It is the skill Song Jushi has practised for more than 47 years, and it is what a private reading from him is for: one written answer, prepared from your natal chart and your current cycle, to a question you actually need settled. A Private Question is the shortest form; Decade Transition, Love Outlook and Wealth Outlook take the longer view. The decision stays yours, and a reading is not medical, legal or financial advice.
Common questions
What is the Day Master in Ba Zi?
The heavenly stem of the day pillar, 日主. It is the reference point of the chart: every other stem is named by its relationship to it.
Do I need my birth hour to know my Day Master?
No. The Day Master is set by the date of birth; only the hour pillar needs the hour. If the chart intake asks and you do not know it, choose ‘I don’t know my birth hour’.
Is 七殺, Seven Killings, a bad sign?
No. It names the element that controls the Day Master at the same polarity: pressure and discipline. Whether that is backbone or burden depends on the Day Master’s strength and the rest of the chart.
Why does the same stem have a different name in my friend’s chart?
Because the names are relative: a stem is named by how it stands to the Day Master, and your friend’s Day Master is a different stem.
