BA ZI · FOUR PILLARS OF DESTINY
Your Ba Zi chart starts with the birth details
A Ba Zi calculator builds the Four Pillars from a birth date and time. A reading then interprets how those pillars relate. Before starting your chart at Sage Song, check the calendar, place and time you are entering—small input differences can produce different charts.

A birth record is useful if you have one. If you only know an approximate time, keep that uncertainty in mind rather than treating the hour as exact. Enter your own details in the chart flow; you do not need to post them in a public comment or send them to another member.
| Detail | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Birth date | Which calendar the original date uses | A Gregorian date and a lunar date are different ways of recording a day. |
| Birth time | The recorded local time and how certain it is | The hour pillar depends on time; a guess should not be treated as a verified birth time. |
| Birthplace | The actual birth location | Place helps establish the time context used for the chart. |
| A lunar date | Whether the record names a leap month | A leap lunar month needs to be distinguished from the ordinary month of the same number. |
Chinese calendar dates and solar terms are different things
The Hong Kong Observatory publishes Gregorian–lunar conversion tables for 1901–2100. These can help you check what calendar a recorded date belongs to; they are not a personal reading.
The Observatory also explains the 24 solar terms: 24 positions around the Sun’s apparent annual path, spaced 15 degrees apart. A lunar calendar conversion and a solar-term boundary answer different calendar questions. Changing only the month number is not a reliable way to reproduce a chart.
Those references explain the calendar. They do not verify Sage Song’s software, certify a particular chart, or establish that a prediction will come true.

What the Four Pillars tell you—and what they do not
The year, month, day and hour pillars each pair a stem with a branch: four pairs, or eight characters. That is the literal idea behind Ba Zi, 八字. The Day Master is the stem of the day pillar; it is one part of the chart, not a complete description of you.
At Sage Song, the chart is where Song Jushi begins, not where he stops. With more than 47 years of practice, he reads the relationships across the whole chart rather than turning a single animal, element or label into a verdict. If you came here with a work, relationship or timing question, the chart alone is not the whole answer; the reading is.
Why two calculators can disagree
Begin with the inputs: was the same date, calendar, location and recorded time used? Then look at the calculation conventions, especially near a day, hour or seasonal boundary. A difference deserves explanation before either chart is treated as definitive.
Keep the details you used when asking about a discrepancy. Avoid repeatedly changing the time just to obtain a chart that sounds more flattering; that changes the premise rather than resolving the question.
Common questions
What is a Ba Zi calculator?
It builds the Four Pillars of a birth from calendar and time information. Each pillar contains a stem and a branch. Calculating the chart and interpreting its relationships are separate steps.
Can I start if I do not know my birth time?
Yes. When the chart intake asks for the hour, choose ‘I don’t know my birth hour’ instead of selecting a guessed time. Keep that uncertainty in mind when reading the chart; an estimated time is not a verified birth record.
Should I convert my birth date to the lunar calendar myself?
Follow the calendar labels in the intake and check which calendar your original record uses. Do not enter a converted lunar date into a field labelled Gregorian. If a record uses a lunar leap month, that detail matters too.
Is a Ba Zi chart the same as a Chinese zodiac animal?
No. The familiar year animal is one part of the year pillar. A Ba Zi chart contains year, month, day and hour pillars, and a reading considers their relationships.
Does a calculator prove that a prediction is correct?
No. A calendar calculation and a traditional interpretation are different claims. A reading can offer themes for reflection; it cannot guarantee a medical, financial or relationship outcome.
