What does “Jushi” mean?

Jushi (居士, pronounced jū shì) is the title of a lay Buddhist who has formally taken refuge in the Three Jewels and received the precepts. It is not a title anyone can give themselves. Song Jushi (宋居士) has done both, has practised for more than 47 years, and is the teacher behind Sage Song: in English, Sage stands for 居士 and Song for 宋.

About Sage Song

A title that has to be earned

Taiwan’s Ministry of Education dictionary records two meanings for 居士: a person of learning living apart from office, and a lay Buddhist. The two traditions arrive at the same place. The title has to be carried by something real.

In Buddhist practice, a person becomes a 居士 by formally taking refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha, usually in a ceremony led by a monastic. Many go on to receive the lay precepts and keep them for life. In the scholar’s tradition, the title was worn by figures such as Su Shi, who called himself 東坡居士, the Layman of the Eastern Slope.

Sage Song is Song Jushi

宋 is the surname Song; 居士 is the title. No single English word carries the weight of 居士, and Sage is the closest. So Sage Song is Song Jushi: the same teacher and the same method, presented in English.

Song Jushi has taken refuge and received the precepts, and he has practised for more than 47 years. Over that time, many of Taiwan’s well-known celebrities and entrepreneurs have consulted him. Client confidentiality is a rule of his practice, so their names are not disclosed here or anywhere else.

When a Journal note carries the Sage Song byline, it is a house editorial note.

Why people choose Song Jushi

Most readings stop at one chart. Song Jushi’s Four Arts Method calculates Ba Zi, Zi Wei Dou Shu, Western astrology and Vedic astrology independently, then reads them against each other. Where they agree, the answer carries more weight. Where they disagree, the contradiction is explained rather than hidden.

For a home or a business, he works in the Flying Star school (玄空飛星), reading the building, the period and the charts of the people in it together. What you receive is specific and in writing. It gives you a clear basis for the decision; the decision stays yours, and a reading does not replace medical, legal or financial advice.
